AFSP Course – Annual Filing Season Program
The AFSP Course is designed for non-credentialed tax return preparers who want to enhance their federal tax knowledge and participate in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP).
The program helps tax professionals stay current on federal tax law, filing requirements, ethics, and other important topics needed to prepare accurate and compliant tax returns.
What the AFSP Course Includes
Depending on the tax preparer's eligibility and IRS requirements, AFSP continuing education may include:
- Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) – Reviews important federal tax law concepts and recent tax law changes. The AFTR generally includes a 6-hour course and comprehension test for preparers who are required to complete it.
- Federal Tax Law Continuing Education – Education covering individual federal tax topics, filing requirements, deductions, credits, income, and other relevant tax matters.
- Federal Tax Law Updates – Information about new or updated federal tax laws and IRS rules that may affect the upcoming filing season.
- Ethics Continuing Education – Training covering professional responsibilities, ethical standards, due diligence, and proper conduct for tax professionals.
- Required Continuing Education Hours – AFSP participants generally complete 18 hours of IRS-approved continuing education, although certain exempt preparers may have different requirements.
